New solutions for slew-rate controlled switching

Siliconix incorporated, an 80.4%-owned subsidiary of Vishay Intertechnology, Inc, is shipping three new devicesfor slew-rate controlled switching, instant power-on, and battery disconnect functions in notebook and desktop computers.
The new Si4788CYis a 5-A p-channel power switch designed to control several loads at their common source in a notebook computer. Providing acontrolled slew rate of the voltage on the output of a dc-to-dc converter, the Si4788CYcombines its integrated level-shift feature with on-resistance of 25 milliohms, a record for this device type.

Compatible with all types of logic down to 1.8 V, the Si4788CY can be used to control voltages from 1.8 V to 5.5 V, even if the logic input is at a lower voltage than the power voltage. The controlled slew rate reduces in rush currents when the device is switching loads with a high value of capacitance, thus making the Si4788CY a useful device for a number of applications beyond notebook computers where controlled switching is desirable, including minicomputers, mainframes, storage arrays, and telecom office equipment.

The new Si4700DY is the industry's first ground-referenced ACPI switch that facilitates the 'instant power on' feature in desktop computers. Combining a true logic level input with level shift, the Si4700DY eliminates the need for an external MOSFET and requires only a resistorfor a complete solution.

Used in ACPI applications, the Si4700DY switches between the two outputs supplied by an ATX power supply and allows part of the circuit to be isolated and powered by an 'always-on' power supply, such that the main power supply and fan can be turned off while the computer is in suspend mode. The Si4700DY integrates two MOSFETs with respective on resistance of 30 milliohms and 70 milliohms and features ESD protection on the control input to 3000 V.

A third device, the new Si4710CY,is aimed at battery disconnect applications, where two Si4710CYs used in series function as a reverse blocking switch. Suitable for notebook computers and other end products utilizing multiple battery technologies or in designs that require isolation from the power bus during charging, the Si4710CY solution provides all the components needed for controlling battery power from a microcontroller, replacing up to eight discrete components. Switching voltage rails from 6 V to 30 V, the Si4710CY features an integrated p-channel MOSFET with on-resistance of 18 milliohms. The device consumesjust 1 microamp of power in the off state.
