New tailored blanks companies in Mexico and Italy

ThyssenKrupp Steel : 02 July, 2001  (Company News)
ThyssenKrupp Stahl subsidiary Thyssen F
ThyssenKrupp Stahl subsidiary Thyssen Fügetechnik GmbH is further expanding its interna-tional activities in the production of laser-welded tailored blanks for the automobile industry.

In Mexico it has set up Thyssen Tailored Blanks S.A. de C.V. based in Puebla. From September 2001 the company will supply Volkswagen Mexico directly with tailored blanks for various models - including the New Beetle and Bora, and employ 37 people. The managing director of the new company is Dr.-Ing. Olaf Voß.

In Italy, Thyssen Tailored Blanks S.r.l. has been formed, based in Turin. This company will have around 20 employees and will supply tailored blanks to Fiat and other car manufacturers and component suppliers in southern Europe. The managing director is Dr. Jens Overrath, previously manager of the tailored blanks operations in Duisburg.

The two new tailored blanks companies will each start production with one laser welding unit, with a second unit being added next year in each case to allow the production of tailored blanks with both linear and non-linear welds.

With four tailored blanks operations in Germany and further joint ventures in the USA, Brazil and Spain, ThyssenKrupp is world market leader in tailored blanks. Additional sites are planned. Demand for these innovative steel products is growing at double-digit rates.
