New Zealand manufacturer produces the quietest motor in its class using Rynite PET and Zytel

WDT's RF 66 motor is typically used in forward and backward curved fans for whole house ventilation units, heat recovery units, dehumidifiers and other white goods applications. The company's commercial manager, Marta Di Domizio, said, 'The damping properties of DuPont Rynite PET help to reduce noise and vibration in the RF66 motor to best-in-class levels. As a result, the motor is five times quieter than a typical PSC motor in the same fan assembly, only 29.2 dB at 100 Hz. This makes it ideal for air moving appliances that operate near people.'
Wellington Drive Technologies Ltd. of Auckland, New Zealand has developed patented technology to manufacture two efficient variable speed motors, the RF 66 and RF 200, that leverage the high performance characteristics of DuPont Rynite PET thermoplastic polyester and Zytel nylon resins.

The company's commercial manager, Marta Di Domizio, said, 'The damping properties of DuPont Rynite PET help to reduce noise and vibration in the RF66 motor to best-in-class levels. As a result, the motor is five times quieter than a typical PSC motor in the same fan assembly, only 29.2 dB at 100 Hz. This makes it ideal for air moving appliances that operate near people.'

Other benefits gained from the new motors include higher efficiency, continuously variable speed, design flexibility, programmable responses (for example constant flow or constant speed), 230V input with fully integrated electronics and lighter weight.

Rynite PET was chosen over glass reinforced PBT for the rotor/stator component on both motors because of its higher service temperature capabilities and because the thermoplastic polyester resin maintains its long-term properties at elevated temperatures. The U.S. Underwriters Laboratory approval process was assisted the incorporation of DuPont's pre-approved Electrical Insulation Systems.

WDT's senior mechanical engineer, Drazen Jaksic, said, 'The DuPont EIS has helped to reduce time and costs in getting a number of our electric motors approved. In particular, the support of DuPont New Zealand made possible the completion of the approval process for these two new motors in a relatively short period of time.'

Rynite PET was also selected for the RF 66 and RF 200 because of its mechanical properties such as dimensional stability, strength and stiffness. DuPont Zytel FR15, a flame retardant grade of DuPont's nylon resin, was selected for the motors' enclosure components due to its excellent moulding performance and its flame retarding properties.

Di Domizio explained: 'The use of DuPont engineering pPolymers contributes to improved design flexibility in our products. In the case of the FR66, a continuously variable speed motor with a shaft power rating of up to 50W, the absence of stamped laminations, reduced part count and simplified assembly with snap fit components all helped us to improve the degree of customisation of the motor. For example, when we needed to respond to market demands regarding a 92 mm diameter external rotor motor to fit to a number of fan wheels, we were able to adjust the external diameter of the rotor and start production within three weeks from the initial demand at extremely low cost.

'Meanwhile, the FR 200 motor (with power up to 750 W) is an example of the efficiency offered by our proprietary motor technology. Peak efficiency is up to 80 percent and part speed efficiency is up to five times better than triac-controlled induction motors. Typical applications for this motor include light industrial and domestic air moving applications, as well as heat sensitive applications like evaporative cooling. The RF 200 is also an excellent example of the level of integration offered by our motors, in which the single piece rotor doubles as a hub for an adjustable pitch axial fan.

'For both motors, fewer components, the absence of stamped laminations and extensive use of injection moulding have contributed to improved design flexibility. This is very important in that it allows us to tailor our products to meet customers' specific requirements with less effort and a shorter lead time, compared to traditional motor manufacturers.'

Di Domizio concluded, 'Two of the biggest areas of innovation in motor manufacture today are achieving high efficiency and reducing noise. Our design, and the use of DuPont Engineering Polymers, has delivered both features, making our motor and fan products competitive at an international level.
