Newly-developed DuPont

Cement slabs and paving, proofed and coated with the new technology, captivate not only with their appealing aesthetics but also with their durability and high immunity to dirt, and meet high customer expectations for Rinn products.

Dirt, damp, leaves, chewing gum, street debris, mud and oil – these are just some of the things that make public spaces and pedestrian zones look unattractive. In the private sphere it is often remnants of barbecues on the patio, or the oil-stain on the driveway. Cleaning requires a lot of effort and is not always a complete success – more often than not traces will remain. A further problem is damp, which encourages the growth of both algae and moss on outside surfaces – a visible tinge of green being the consequence. This can also give rise to lime deposits.

Christian Rinn, together with his brother Roland Rinn, managing director of Rinn Beton- und Naturstein: “Starting with today’s customer demands on cement products, such as immunity to dirt, ease-of-cleaning, colour stability and durability, we developed together with DuPont and BETRA, along with other companies involved in the process, a new form of protection for our products based on Teflon® surface protection technology. And, as a result, our cement products have gained further in terms of perceived value and quality, because such a level of protection for these products has not previously been available to the market.”

Three levels of protection have been developed, Teflon® Schutz RSF 1, RSF 3 or Teflon® Schutz RSF 5. The high-performance Teflon® Schutz RSF 5 is a transparent, dual-surface coating which is particularly immune to dirt and is very easy to clean. Dirt is unable to penetrate in the first place, as the coating forms such a close, permanent bond to the surface. With both Teflon® Schutz RSF 1 and RSF 3, the cement product is proofed itself, and can be simply topped up at any time. The stone becomes more durable and easier to care for than standard products.

Standardised performance tests, which deliver clearly-defined, evaluative results, as well as trial-surfaces, substantiate the high quality of the new products. A trial-surface at the ‘Phantasialand’ theme park (80 m2) was laid with concrete slabs protected with Teflon® Schutz RSF 5. The surface was in a highly-populated area, where up to two million visitors are registered each year. An official ‘material testing body’ from Kassel University evaluated the condition of the slabs after six months. Six slabs were washed down with water and microscopically tested. The coating had remained undamaged on all of the stones.

The results are indisputable. Fundamentally all stubborn forms of dirt can be cleaned off more easily from products with Teflon® surface protection, than those without. The new technology allows the dirt to be rinsed away with water or, depending on the amount of dirt, with the use of a mild, environmentally-friendly cleaning substance. The green tinge, caused by algae and moss, has nothing to feed from. The Teflon® protection makes the surface insensitive to mechanical influences, resistant to lime deposits and protects it against ultra-violet rays.
