Owens Corning introduces one-step solution to meet fire-resistant standard TB603 for mattress manufacturers

Owens Corning : 06 June, 2006  (New Product)
To help mattress manufacturers comply with California's open-flame-resistance standard TB603 without making any manufacturing process changes, Owens Corning today introduced the first one-step composite solution, Owens Corning Fire Resistant Filler Cloth. Comprised of fire- resistant and self-extinguishing fibers, Owens Corning (FR) Filler Cloth is seamlessly bonded directly to standard non-FR filler cloth, which then looks, feels and installs just like traditional materials that are applied to the bottom of no-flip mattresses.
Together, the materials are inherently fire- resistant without additional chemical treatment, effectively shielding foam and other flammable 'comfort materials' within the mattress and foundation. The patented product also meets other industry standards for grab, tear and elongation strength.

'While compliance with new regulations often results in costly or complicated process changes, Owens Corning (FR) Filler Cloth provides a one- of-a-kind solution that meets this challenge by fitting into the existing manufacturing process and, because there is no change in the way the product handles, requires no employee retraining,' said J.P. Blanchard, market manager for OC Veil Technologies North America.

Research has identified that most bed fires are a result of children playing with igniters such as matches, lighters or candles. In light of this, the California Bureau of Home Furnishing introduced the Technical Bulletin 603 standards. These regulations, which go into effect in California in January 2005 and nationwide later in the year, give consumers more time to escape should a bedroom fire occur.

'The fact that this product both meets manufacturers' needs, and is so key to consumer safety in the home is particularly exciting for our company,' added Blanchard. 'Our corporate purpose is to deliver solutions, transform markets and enhance lives and this product truly delivers on all three.'

Long available in Europe, Owens Corning's veil business in North America is one of the company's fastest growing around the world, with sales up 300 percent in just two years. Other markets for veil include cushioned vinyl flooring, ceiling tiles, printed circuit boards, and automotive headliners.
