Akzo Nobel's salt plant in Hengelo, the Netherlands, has become the biggest vacuum salt factory in the world following the official opening of a new extension.
Akzo Nobel's salt plant in Hengelo, the Netherlands, has become the biggest vacuum salt factory in the world following the official opening of a new extension.

The plant, which is operated by the company's Base Chemicals business, now has a capacity of 2.4 million tons per year, an increase of 400,000 tons.

'This investment is a positive signal to everyone connected with the Hengelo site,' said general manager of the Base Chemicals business, Werner Fuhrmann. 'It strengthens the position of the site and underlines Akzo Nobel's ambition to strengthen its leading position in the salt business.'

The expansion of the plant began in 2003, with the most remarkable piece of new equipment being a new crystallizer which weighs 60,000 kilos, has a diameter of eight meters and is 25 meters long.
