Sandvik at Achema 2003

Sandvik Coromant UK : 20 May, 2003  (Company News)
Product area Process Systems within Sandvik Materials Technology is represented at this years ACHEMA, highlighting the following topics:
The leadership and progress in steel belt based process technology for the chemical, plastic and food industry

As exhibit a complete Rotoform® 3ooo, as it is build for a customer. This type of Rotoformer® is the base for the Rotoform® family which now gives the possibility to pastillate very big range of products.

The original Rotoform® HS-which represents the newest development within the Rotoform® family – for high capacity production

The steel belt product range for process technology

Sandvik continues to maintain its position of leadership in process technology for the chemical and food industry by building on the proven strengths of its Rotoform® system.
This process – which makes full use of the strength, durability and thermal transfer properties of the steel belt – is used for the pastillation of many different chemical types. First introduced by Sandvik in the 1980s, Rotoform® has proved its worth time and time again, reaching the landmark figure of 1000 installations just last year.

The Rotoform® pastillation family – Nine models now available
The experience gained by Sandvik in steel belt-based granulation has enabled the company to adapt, develop and improve upon the Rotoform® concept, building new solutions to a range of new chemical processing applications. The basic principle remains the same – the efficient processing of a melt into solid pastilles – but an entire Rotoform® family has now been developed:

Rotoform 3000 – standard unit for solidifying low and high viscous melts

Rotoform HS – the latest addition to the family, specially designed for high capacity pastillation
(High Speed)

Rotoform HT – special unit for pastillating melts with a high feed temperature (up to 320˚ C)

Rotoform FD – designed to meet the special requirements of the food industry in terms of hygiene and ease dismantling/cleaning

Rotoform AS – for sedimenting and abrasive melts

Rotoform SC – for pastillation of subcooling melts

Rotoform CR – for corrosive products

Rotoform MC – for production of micropastilles (down to 1 mm dia.)

Rotoform MI – for small scale products and laboratory use

With such a broad range of solutions at its disposal, Sandvik can offer complete process packages – from initial handling of the molten product to final bagging or loading systems – for dozens of different product types including sulphur, waxes, resins and fertilizer.

Supercooling process for subcooling melts
Some product melts will not solidify simply through cooling, requiring instead a controlled precrystallisation process before pastillation. These products, known as subcooling melts, can be solidified using a specially developed system which combines a precrystallizer with Sandvik Rotoformer and steel belt cooler.

The completion of more than 50 'supercooling' installations has again resulted in process improvement and the development of systems tailored to clients' specific product or process requirements. Such is the performance and reliability of Sandvik's supercooling process that it is now accepted as being the standard solution for continuous and controlled pastillation of subcooling melts.

Process technology – film/sheet casting and sheet moulding
The inherent qualities of the steel belt – its hard, durable, smooth surface and ease of repair; its resistance to corrosion and heat damage; ease of cleaning; the fact that it can be welded to create an endless belt; and its high thermal conductivity and high tensile stress resistance – makes it suited to countless other applications.

Sandvik has made full use of these properties with the development of single and double belt systems – plus custom up and downstream equipment – for processes that include continuous film casting, sheet casting and sheet moulding. Industries for which these systems are now proving an economical solution include the production of automotive goods, building cladding panels and electronics. In many cases, this steel belt technology provides the only feasible solution to meeting the stringent standards of these industries.

Test and demo centers
Customers interested in seeing for themselves the capabilities of Sandvik's process systems can do so at one of the company's test and demonstration centers. These are equipped to enable demonstration of all basic processes, together with product testing and even pilot production using the customer's own material.

For customers unable to visit their nearest demo center, or for applications which cannot be carried out there, Sandvik has developed mobile test units which can be transported to virtually any location in the world.
