Sandvik Bioline steel grade uses nanotechnology

Material properties based on nanotechnology are achieved in a specially developed stainless steel called Sandvik Bioline 1RK91
Nanotechnology - the technology of building materials from a molecular level and using atomic or molecular properties to create new structures - is attracting a great deal of attention throughout industry and is now being used outside the laboratory to practical effect.

According to Dr Tomas Thorvaldson, Vice President of Research at Sandvik Materials Technology, 'Nano-size particles within materials can change and enhance a materials' properties and hence, performance. Material grade Sandvik Bioline 1RK91 represents a considerable investment in research and process development and has particular benefits for the medical device industry.'

The new steel combines exceptional strength with good ductility and, as a result, is already finding wide application in wire product form for the manufacture of opthalmic, plastic surgery and general suture needles. As well as wire, Sandvik Bioline 1RK91 is now also available in the full Sandvik product range of strip, bar, rod and seamless tubes and is ideally suited to the manufacture of torque wrenches, drill bits, catheter tubing and interdental brushes. It is corrosion resistant, good for repeated sterilisation, has good edge retention properties for blades and cutting tools, an excellent surface finish and the potential for lighter devices to be produced.

Sandvik wire for medical applications is now available in a new delivery form. Designed to ensure that the wire is fully protected and, therefore, arrives in the cleanest possible condition, it is wound on to white, non-returnable, spools, protected with plastic film and finally packed in a white cardboard box.

The high strength of Sandvik Bioline 1RK91 is achieved by age hardening. This means that products can be formed in the soft condition prior to developing the final and desired strength.

Developed by Sandvik as a medical grade material, cytotoxicity testing by customers has confirmed that Sandvik Bioline 1RK91 does not possess any cytotoxic potential under in vitro testing and can, therefore, be safely in contact with human tissue, fluids or blood. It also meets all necessary standards and tests for its lack of allergy and skin irritation potential.

Sandvik Bioline 1RK91 is a member of the Sandvik Bioline family which includes a wide range of material grades in various product forms developed for medical applications. Supplies to medical device manufactures of tube, bar, strip, wire, cannulated bar and profile shapes, produced in the Sandvik Materials Technology manufacturing plants in Europe and the US, are sold and marketed through the Sandvik Materials Technology sales companies around the world and through two major and dedicated sales, marketing and distribution centres Sandvik Bioline NAFTA based in Scranton, PA, USA and Sandvik Bioline UK, based in Sheffield, UK.
