Sandvik focuses its marketing of medical alloys

Sandvik Coromant UK : 30 April, 2003  (Company News)
A recent announcement from materials specialist, Sandvik Materials Technology, to intensify its focus on high value-added, technology products has led to the restructure of its marketing and distribution of medical materials.
As a result, the Sandvik Bioline™ family of stainless steels, titanium and special alloy products for medical and dental applications has been consolidated into a new, dedicated business unit.

Supplies to medical device manufacturers of tube, bar, strip, wire, cannulated bar and profile shapes, produced in the Sandvik Materials Technology manufacturing plants in Europe and the US, are now sold and marketed through a single organisation.

Although the US and Europe are the largest markets for medical products, the re-organisation strategy recognises the trend for medical devices to be manufactured and sold throughout the world. Consolidated groups and large companies can be assured that the same quality of materials is available globally. The main operating effect of the new organisation is that the Sandvik Bioline sales and marketing unit will function as a global supplier, across all of Sandvik Materials Technology's product areas and will provide the co-ordinating role for the worldwide sales and production units.

It will support worldwide markets technically and will ensure that the needs of its global customers are serviced with high quality materials for the manufacture of a wide range of medical products. Typically, these include orthopaedic and dental implants, fracture fixation devices, suture needles and staples, surgical blades and saw cutting tools, dental burrs and reamers, catheter guide wire systems and wire for diagnostic and sensor electrical leads.
Overall, the Sandvik Group devotes 4% of its annual turnover to research into new materials and the development of production processes. The new Sandvik Bioline business unit provides a focus for the development of new materials and products, in line with the core Sandvik policy of providing material solutions in niche markets. Many of the material grades and products in the Sandvik Bioline range have been developed to meet specific customer and end user requirements. One example is Sandvik Bioline High-N. Specially developed by Sandvik for orthopaedic implant applications, the grade is now accepted as an industry standard.

The Sandvik Bioline business unit has two major and dedicated sales, marketing and distribution centres - Sandvik Bioline - NAFTA based in Scranton, PA and Sandvik Bioline UK based in Sheffield, UK. Sandvik Bioline product specialists are located strategically throughout the world. Sandvik Materials Technology maintains close customer contacts with operations in over 130 countries.

Nigel Haworth, managing director of Sandvik Bioline says, 'The global market for implants, medical devices and tools is vast and is growing year on year. Our aim is to provide our customers with an even better service through the new structure, which co-ordinates all of our resources into one global organisation. No other supplier to the medical market has the range of products, research and development resources or the distribution capability of Sandvik Materials Technology. I believe that we are well positioned to meet the tough demands of our customers'.
