Science based solutions for the global cosmetics market

In the luxury and cosmetics industry, packaging has to meet demands for shelf appeal, transparency and thickness, combined with tactile qualities: consumers like objects that are eye-catching, robust, and yet soft to the touch.
Through DuPont Cosmetic Solutions, a new strategy specifically dedicated to the luxury industry, DuPont is bringing together all its technological, marketing and creative expertise to design cutting-edge science-based solutions for cosmetic and personal care products that will enhance brand image and help meet a variety of consumer trends.

DuPont™ Surlyn® is one of the most well-known brands in the cosmetics industry. While scientists at DuPont are continuously working to improve the properties and qualities of Surlyn® ionomer resins, they have also been working on developments which go far beyond perfume caps.

The range of products offered by DuPont today also includes the wide range of engineering polymers, in particular, Delrin® Decorating Solutions, Tyvek® for packaging, DuPont™ Holographics, ChromaLusion™ Colours using revolutionary Mirrometric™ pigmentation technology, Tynex® nylon filaments, the copolymer resin Elvaloy® AC and the amorphous polyamide resin, Selar® PA, and a diverse line of DuPont Packaging adhesives, resins and films. These products provide an excellent response to the needs of the cosmetic & perfume market, as well as the luxury market in general as they are perfect, for instance, for decorative items.

DuPont™ Surlyn® Packaging Resins
DuPont™ Surlyn® packaging resins provide designers with versatility, creative freedom, a luxurious look and feel, safety features (versus glass) and, very often, cost savings over more complicated closure methods. Their properties meet needs for a combination of chemical resistance, clarity, good feel and ease of moulding with integral threads. Its glass-like clarity allows translucent colours and, using in-mold finishes, a frosted glass appearance and other textures can also be achieved.

DuPont™ Delrin® Decorating Solutions
New DuPont™ Delrin® Decorating Solutions will give package designers more ways to combine the look of luxury with high functionality in cosmetic closures and containers. The new breakthrough technology delivers the high-fashion aesthetics of painted plastics along with valuable functional attributes of DuPont™ Delrin® acetal resins such as resistance to alcohol and most other perfume and cosmetic ingredients, mechanical strength and toughness. DuPont is also developing metal plating technology on its engineering polymers (Delrin®, HTN and Minlon®).

Tyvek® for Packaging
DuPont™ Tyvek® combines the best physical properties of paper, film and fabric to offer unique advantages for a wide variety of demanding packaging applications. Made of 100% high-density polyethylene fibres, Tyvek® brand materials are manufactured in a proprietary flash-spinning process without the use of binders, giving a durable, rugged sheet structure. Opaque and smooth, lightweight yet strong, lint-free and printable, DuPont™ Tyvek® brings a beautiful range of colours and soft textures to cosmetics and personal care packagers.

DuPont Holographics
Holographic materials is the latest in a stream of new technologies stemming from a strong DuPont business base and core technology in photopolymers. Whether it's in hologram images so real they appear to move or in HOEs for enhanced displays, DuPont photopolymer holographic film is taking visual impact to a new level and opening up multiple pathways for the growth of holographics in many diverse markets.

ChromaLusion™ Colours
ChromaLusion™ Colours is the DuPont trademark for a palette of ChromaPremier™ Basecoat Factory Package colours using revolutionary Mirrometric™ pigment technology. This pigment is completely different from traditional organic, inorganic, metallic or pearl pigments currently in use. It has no colour of its own but creates colour with a prism effect by refracting or bending light through a five-layer flake constructed of transparent metal oxides using a semiconductor process. This results in much brighter colours, with the appearance of a metallic and the brilliance and saturation of a tinted clear or pearl tri-coat.

3D sublimation decorating process
Sublimation decoration is a well-known process consisting of transferring an image or a printing pattern onto the part to be decorated using heat and pressure. It has been widely employed for many years for flat surfaces, such as textiles and skis. DuPont Engineering Polymers has been actively working to adapt the process to surfaces of three dimensions and now offers to decorate complex parts made of engineering polymers, such as Delrin®, Zytel®, Crastin® or Rynite®.

This new technology enhances the aesthetic appearance with sophisticated or colored decorations and therefore eliminates the need for covering the engineering part with another one, just for aesthetic purposes. It brings benefits to manufacturers and designers by reducing costs and weight, and meets the current trend to show off and emphasize engineering components. Excellent adhesion/abrasion resistance is provided when the 3D decorations are applied onto the engineering polymers.

Envex® powder coating solutions
Envex® thermoset powder coatings were recently developed jointly by DuPont Engineering Polymers and DuPont Powder Coatings and offer a new and different way to decorate plastics. It is a fact that mass coloration only provides limited possibilities and liquid paints often peel off plastic surfaces. Yet, it is a growing demand from designers that these materials, including engineering polymers, should fulfill an aesthetic function in addition to their traditional mechanical and chemical functions.

Envex® powder coating is a VOC free, environmentally friendly paint process, is applied as a monolayer and enables decorative effects not obtainable with liquid paints. They can create matt and non smooth surfaces finishes, with a metallic look such as cast-iron. Today, they are mainly used with nylon resins such as Minlon® and Zytel®, as well as PBT, PET and even glass.

Elvaloy® AC Acrylate Copolymers
Elvaloy® AC acrylate copolymers are a new family of butyl-, ethyl-, and methyl-acrylate (EBA, EEA and EMA) resins that can be processed easily on conventional extrusion and extrusion coating equipment used by packaging film converters. These resins are noncorrosive and offer melt strength, thermal stability and processing ease.

Elvaloy® AC resins can withstand high-heat processes up to 300°C and higher without thermal degradation. Elvaloy® AC resins can deliver the benefits of higher comonomer content, such as soft touch, without significant loss of service temperature or processing ease.

Selar® PA Amorphous Nylon Barrier Resins
DuPont™ Selar® PA amorphous nylon barrier resins provide unique oxygen barrier properties. In bottles, jars and other rigid structures, Selar® PA offers the crystal clarity of glass, but with lower weight and better impact resistance. Selar® PA can be blended with nylon 6 and with ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) to provide certain property and processing advantages.
