Tough aramid produces light components and systems

Alchemie, along with the AuTx co-development partner and world leading specialist yarns producer Kamenskvolokno JSC, is demonstrating at DSEI how AuTx can be used to achieve significant weight savings in a huge range of aerospace, land and marine equipment. Through the use of AuTx the weight of a huge range of military components and systems can be reduced by over 50%.
For dismounted soldiers and special forces operators who often carry over 15kg of textiles, through the substitution of the current materials with much tougher lighter AuTx materials the textile mass can be reduced to 5kg. This represents a 40% increase in effective payload (based on the current British Army's 35kg irreducible minimum load target for a dismounted soldier), whilst doubling the protected surface area of the body.
AuTx use in many fragment and bullet resistant applications reduces the textile based body armour mass up to 50% in comparison with many in service armour systems. Personal protection includes those tested to the following standards or by specific end users: SK, VPAM, GOST, MoDRF, MVD, SAPS, HKPF, US DoD SPS & IOTV, NIJ, UK MoD, CAST, DGA, CREAL, Israel, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.
Instead of lower strength combat uniforms that are currently made from materials such as viscose, meta & para-aramids, polyamide, polyester and cottons, a single layer of AuTx material meets the US Army SPS “Base Level” fragment resistance requirements and has enhanced cut resistance, tear resistance, and fire protection properties. Wearing a uniform made from AuTx could reduce the severity of injuries inflicted by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and reduce surgical time by up to 75%. This is achieved through dramatic reduction in egress of microbes contained fragments. AuTx "Fire&Ice” insulation will reduce the mass of insulated garments and sleeping systems by 50%, reduce bulk by 75% and add significant fire and fragment protection.
By substituting polyamide materials for AuTx the weight of tactical body armour vests, webbing, pouches, bergens/rucksacks, safety harnesses, stretchers, can be reduced by kilograms, at the same time increasing IED protection.
AuTx Fibre
AuTx fibre was developed by Kamenskvolokno in a joint R&D program with the Alchemie Group. The program's aim is to create optimised fragment, highly penetrative bullet, knife and spike-resistant materials based on the sopolyaramid family of fibres/yarns produced by Kamenskvolokno.
Alchemie Group’s proprietary  technology includes rights to the fibre, textile design and engineering, including: weaving, textile treatments and protective solutions. Testing is in accordance with international and key client standards and data analysis. The requirements for optimised AuTx fibre/yarn include: chemical structure, filament diameter and count, processing regimes, twist factor, etc.
AuTx fibre/yarn is produced on a commercial scale in accordance with international standards, as well as key client specific requirements, under the supervision of, and exclusively for, Alchemie Group. Alchemie produces a large variety of specialist materials for resisting a wide range of threats including: fragments, bullets, knives, spikes, needles, etc. under the fibre/yarn and material brand AuTx.
AuTx fibre/yarn has similar chemical properties to other aramid fibres produced by Kamenskvolokno of the same family as Ruslan & Artec where the reliability has been proven through years of testing and in-service use with a number of the world's leading military and aerospace organisations.
Ballistic materials based on AuTx fibre/yarn are for protection where the lowest weights are required. For military requirements the AuTx fragmentation protection solutions offer mass reductions up to 50% in comparison with the highest performance para-aramid materials for body armour and helmets.
