Toyo introduces new machine for optical disc production

Axxicon Mould Technology : 09 April, 2003  (New Product)
Toyo Machinery & Metal Co. has launched a new machine for the production of optical discs, especially DVDs. The new machine is the result of the co-operation between Toyo and Future Technology Engineering (FTE). Toyo provided in-depth knowledge of electrical injection moulding machines. FTE contributed extensive mould and processing know-how.

This new optical disk production unit, with its untraditional interface, is the world’s first fully integrated electric mould/machine, suitable for all formats. The machine is especially compact and has an extremely small footprint – even including relevant downstream equipment - yet it offers an exceptionally high degree of machine stability with no tie-bar adjustment, single button operation and an operator-friendly stamper change system. The machine produces superb quality discs, typically delivering DVDs in less than 3.0 seconds.

The new machine is currently undergoing extensive testing at selected customer locations with the support of M2 Engineering AB regarding down stream equipment. The unit was developed to meet the specific needs of the replication industry: equipment needs to be smaller, more reliable and offering fast(er) cycle times, quick format change and adaptability for future formats.

In launching the new machine, Toyo President Isao Yasuda said: “The world of optical media is constantly changing. Customers are looking for greater productivity, whilst major advances in technology drive the need for ongoing investment. We believe that the only cost-effective way forward is through the integration of expertise. Working together, this partnership has been able to deliver new standards with a quality system that offers an innovative solution as well as significant productivity savings.”

Ralph Kruidering, Managing Director of FTE said: “This machine represents a significant step forward. With extensive experience at all levels, the individual partners are well positioned to meet the requirements of the world-wide replication industry.” He added that the Toyo/FTE partnership is delivering added value for its customers: “It can best be described as a triple-win situation. We believe that the market will benefit from this introduction which is based on our combined know-how.”

Toyo Machinery & Metal Co. is a leading manufacturer of electric injection moulding machines.. The company was founded in 1925 and employs more than 400 people world-wide. It is part of the Hitachi Group and makes significant investments in the development and refining of new technologies.

FTE is an engineering company specialised in the design and engineering of production systems, with a high degree of complexity and innovation. FTE is a subsidiary of Axxicon Mould Technology, a recognised market leader in the production of mould systems.
