Toyolac ABS from Distrupol enables Taylorite to produce large warp-free mouldings

Distrupol : 26 November, 2004  (New Product)
Leading Europe-wide polymer distributor Distrupol provides plastics processors with the most comprehensive link to the world's foremost resins producers. But while materials distribution is at the core of its business, Distrupol also offers a full range of technical and application development assistance to supplement customers' own resources. These locally delivered services are adapted to individual needs and local conditions to ensure optimized commercial as well as technical solutions.

This unique 'total service' approach recently led to Distrupol being chosen by Taylorite Mouldings of the United Kingdom, as its supply partner in an automotive front grille development project for its customer LTI Vehicles, the manufacturer of the famous London Taxi Cab.

According to Taylorite: 'With its broad-based materials knowledge and extensive product portfolio, Distrupol was not only able to assist us with material selection but also contribute to the design process by undertaking key tasks such as computer flow simulations and stress analysis, in addition to general project management.'

Taylorite Mouldings is headquartered in Coventry, a centre of manufacturing excellence in the United Kingdom's west midlands where many of the UK's leading manufacturers have a base, including Jaguar, Peugeot, Marconi, NP Aerospace and Amtico. Taylorite's customer, the London Taxi Company, is also based in Coventry, allowing the close collaboration of ideas and the quick response customers insist on.

Toray Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene resin Toyolac was selected for the front grille application because it is a tough, durable material with excellent repeat-impact strength. Compared to other amorphous materials it also offers good chemical resistance. Importantly, Toyolac offers an ideal balance between rigidity and impact strength. This property combination is reflected in the range of applications in which it finds a fit and includes power tools, mirror housings, fan impellers, radios, instrument panels, telephones and computer housings.

Being an amorphous resin, Toyolac ABS enables large warp-free mouldings to be produced, principally because the shrinkage values of amorphous resins are substantially lower than those of semi crystalline materials like polypropylene and polyamide. This comparatively low shrinkage allows the part to be produced flat and prevents a tendency to distort after moulding.

Moreover, ABS cycles more quickly than alternative resins. The high latent heat of fusion of ABS means that it rapidly loses its heat when in the mould tool and therefore, compared to materials like PP, ABS can be moulded and ejected more quickly. In addition, ABS has a high degree of durability that allows the design of parts in thinner wall sections than other less durable resins, further aiding the reduction of cycle time and lowering part weight. Also contributing to the selection ABS was its receptiveness to plating to achieve a metal-look effect. The plating adhesion to ABS is excellent and gives enhanced aesthetic appeal in automotive applications.

In working with Taylorite, Distrupol's was able to bring its extensive materials expertise and processing knowledge to add value to the front grille project. The company's technical service teams responsible for this co-operative success operate throughout Europe, supporting customers locally in all matters relating to component design, material selection and processing.
