Vanguards of UK industry showcase antimicrobial copper

Copper Development Association (CDA) : 08 November, 2014  (Company News)
Five UK companies are contributing antimicrobial copper products to outfit the Copper Hospital at this year's MEDICA Trade Fair. Stand B03 in Hall 14 is showcasing a broad range of antimicrobial copper touch surfaces in the context of an ICU room, bathroom and nurses' station, demonstrating the quality and variety of products available to healthcare facilities wishing to add antimicrobial copper to their suite of infection control measures.
The Copper Hospital is presented by the Copper Alliance - a global network of Copper Centres that has been building expertise in the science and practical application of copper's antimicrobial properties for the last 20 years. The Copper Alliance operates an industry stewardship scheme which provides Cu+ approval for companies meeting the technical and marketing requirements of the Antimicrobial Copper brand. This scheme helps specifiers identify efficacious products made from approved antimicrobial copper alloys.

Allgood is supplying a lever handle, pull handle, thumb turn and toilet flush from its Contego range of ironmongery, which combines the antimicrobial properties of copper with the aesthetic of stainless steel thanks to its choice of a silver-coloured copper alloy.

"No other material offers this remarkable efficacy," explains Alan Field, Allgood's Product and Marketing Director. "This combination of properties - aesthetics, durability and hygiene - is unique to antimicrobial copper and Allgood is proud to be in the vanguard of companies offering this approach to infection control."

Alpri Crafts is providing a brushed brass corner sink, custom-made for the event, which will form the centrepiece of the bathroom section. Its range of antimicrobial copper sanitaryware also includes baths and wash basins, and bespoke items can be made according to customer requests.

"Brass is attractive and very easy to work with," says Priyank Modi, Director of Alpri Crafts. "It has been a material of choice for centuries thanks to its beauty and durability, and now we're aware of its added hygienic benefits, we have even more reason to use it in creating items that are likely to be contaminated by disease-causing bacteria and touched by a variety of people."

Brass Age is supplying an overbed table in brushed brass, as recently installed in The Bostonian Sleep Clinic, where the Clinical Lead is keen to reduce the spread of infection using copper.

"With our Vetobac brand, we are able to offer a range of copper alloy touch surface products including grab rails, handrails and bed rails and through our experience with working with copper alloys we strive to create synergy between antimicrobial efficacy and architectural excellence," says Stephen Hynd, Sales Director for Brass Age.

Pegler Yorkshire is providing a tap from their Performa range, which combines the antimicrobial efficacy of brass with designs meeting the latest HTM hospital guidelines. Pegler Yorkshire's antimicrobial copper range is already proving popular in clinical environments where it significantly reduces microbial burden and can help to reduce the spread of healthcare-associated infections.

Sean Foley, Market Manager of Taps and Mixers at Pegler Yorkshire notes: "Infections are costly for hospitals and antimicrobial copper surfaces are a straightforward measure that can help save money and lives. Pegler Yorkshire has enjoyed a close working relationship with the healthcare sector for more than 80 years and the revolutionary antimicrobial copper hospital taps have been developed in conjunction with healthcare industry professionals."

Varilight is supplying electrical sockets and light switches in brass. Its products are made in the UK and are available in a variety of finishes including copper and brass. Andrew Wilson, Commercial Manager at Varilight, explains: "Light switches are typically touched by many different people and can be a vector for infection in a hospital environment. Our antimicrobial copper and copper alloy ranges offer an attractive and durable method of combatting the spread of infection. We are delighted that our products are being showcased in the MEDICA Copper Hospital, which is a great initiative to raise awareness of the efficacy of these products and the invaluable role they can play in infection control and prevention."
