Vishay's new 500-mA LDO regulator combines 150-mV dropout voltage

Siliconix incorporated, an 80.4%-owned subsidiary of Vishay Intertechnology, has announced the launch of the Si9185, a 500-mA CMOS low dropout regulator that features very low dropout and ground current in an exceptionally compact, thermally enhanced MLP33 PowerPAK package. With low dropout of just 150 mV at 500 mA, and a tiny 3-mm by 3-mm footprint - 70% smaller than the industry-standard SO-8 package, the new Si9185 is designed to prolong battery life in compact, portable electronics including notebook computers, PDAs, digital cameras, and smart phones; or in SMPS.

With low dropout of just 150 mV at 500 mA, and a tiny 3-mm by 3-mm footprint - 70% smaller than the industry-standard SO-8 package, the new Si9185 is designed to prolong battery life in compact, portable electronics including notebook computers, PDAs, digital cameras, and smart phones; or in SMPS.

Vishay's Si9185 LDO is specified for input voltages from 2 V to 6 V and is available in 10 fixed voltage options ranging from 1.2 V to 5.0 V, as well as in adjustable output voltage options. The device features noise output of 100 V(rms) with a noise bypass capacitor, 1.5% output voltage accuracy, 1.1-W power dissipation, and a maximum shutdown current of 1 A. If a capacitor is connected to the device's delay pin, the Si9185's out-of-regulation error flag output pin will generate a delayed power-on-reset signal. Integrated short-circuit and thermal protection ensure reliable operation over the regulator's operating temperature range of -40C to +85C.

The Si9185 serves as a highly cost-effective and compact solution that offers line/load transient response and ripple rejection superior to that of bipolar or BiCMOS LDO regulators. The new device also is compatible with low-ESR ceramic capacitors or tantalum capacitors, providing designers with flexibility in choosing magnetic components.

Samples and production quantities of the Si9185 are available now with lead times of eight weeks for larger orders.
