Winner of the DuPont Safety Resources' European Award 2003 announced

Deutsche Post World Net has won the DuPont Safety Resources |
|
DuPont, a global leader in science-based safety and protective solutions announced the winner and the finalists during a ceremony held at the company’s European headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland in November 2003.
Hitching trailers to trucks frequently involves potentially dangerous situations that can lead to accidents with serious consequences. In light of this, Deutsche Post World Net, one of the leading logistics groups worldwide, developed its accident prevention program under the motto of ‘Safe Hitching Makes Good Sense’. The implementation of this safety program at Deutsche Post has led to a sharp drop in the number of accidents. Particularly gratifying is the fact that there have been no fatalities since the program was introduced.
Other finalists included Derbyshire Education Business Partnership (UK) for its interactive health and safety video for under-16 students who are on work experience placements; Dragados (Spain) for its special training plan on the prevention of occupational hazards; Motorola GmbH Flensburg (Germany) for its employee health promotion program; and The Valencian Generalitat and SEPI (Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales - Spain) for its health and safety plan at an industrial estate.
The award is a replica of a silver Roman coin bearing the inscription “Securit Orbis” and the image of a matron that symbolised safety and security during the 'Pax Romana'. In addition to this silver coin, produced specially for the DuPont Safety Resources’ European Award, the winner received a diploma of merit. The four remaining finalists were given a bronze replica of the Roman coin as well as a diploma of merit.
DuPont launched its first edition of the award scheme in 2002, in order to stimulate individual and collective safety initiatives on the European continent as well as to foster safety in society at large. It rewards the most significant projects in safety, led either by individuals, companies or organisations and considers programmesprojects or contributions in the field of safety in the workplace or in society in general. It also includes printed works containing important innovations or implementations of improvements connected to safety.
The jury assigning the award was selected by the organising committee and was chaired by Jaime Montalvo, president of the Consejo Económico y Social de España (Spanish Economic and Social Council). Other members were Mark Halle (European representative and director, Trade and Investment International Institute for Sustainable Development), José Manuel Hesse (director of Plan Barajas, Spanish Airport Administration), Mireille Quirina (managing director DuPont de Nemours International S.A.) and Juan José Salamanca (vice-president of DuPont Safety Resources Europe, Middle East and Africa).
In 2003, DuPont has continued to reaffirm its commitment to addressing the challenges of safety by forming DuPont Safety & Protection. More than 8,400 people in 21 plants and laboratories worldwide are leveraging and expanding DuPont technology, brands, knowledge and experience to become the global market leader in protecting people, property and operations. DuPont Safety Resources (www.dupont.com/safety), a business within DuPont Safety & Protection, is the authority on safe workplaces, providing consulting and training services in workplace safety, contractor safety, ergonomics and asset effectiveness. |
