The President of an international philanthropic organisation is coming to Wales to see for himself the world-class research his corporation is supporting at Cardiff School of Social Sciences.

Mr Yohei Sasakawa, President of the world-renowned Nippon Foundation, will visit Cardiff University to meet the scholarship winners of the Postgraduate Fellowship Grants Programme. The programme, a new partnership between the Nippon Foundation and the Seafarers International Research Centre in the School of Social Sciences, will enable overseas students to conduct research on maritime-related issues.

Mr Sasakawa will meet with First Minister for Wales Rhodri Morgan and the Rt. Hon Lord Mayor of Cardiff Jacqui Gasson, and discuss the benefits of the partnership. Mr Sasakawa, who has also met Pope John Paul II and former US President Bill Clinton, will then spend time with the scholarship winners.

Helen Sampson, Director of the Centre, said, 'This is the beginning of an exciting partnership that will have an important impact on the safety of those working in the international maritime industry.'

The Seafarers International Research Centre is a unique research centre, analysing the lives, work and welfare of seafarers around the world.
