World Steel in Figures - 2004 edition now available

The 2004 edition of IISI
The 2004 edition of IISIís World Steel in Figures is now available. World Steel in Figures contains essential facts about the world steel industry including steel production, consumption, trade, employment and basic statistics on scrap, iron ore, pig iron and crude steel production.

As in previous years, World Steel in Figures lists the top steel producing countries and companies around the world.

In 2003 the five major steel producing countries were:

1. China 220.1 million metric tons (mmt)
2. Japan 110.5 mmt
3. United States 90.4 mmt
4. Russia 62.7 mmt
5. South Korea 46.3 mmt

Total world production reached 964.8 mmt in 2003, up from 903.6 mmt in 2002.

The largest five steel producing companies in 2003 were:

1. Arcelor 42.8 mmt
2. LNM Group 35.3 mmt
3. Nippon Steel 31.3 mmt
4. JFE 30.2 mmt
5. POSCO 28.9 mmt

World Steel in Figures has been published by the International Iron and Steel Institute every year since 1971.
