In switching from metal to DuPont Zytel HTN high performance polyamide resin for water pump impellers, Heliodino S.A.I.C. is meeting needs for high reliability while saving on production costs. One of the leading manufacturers of automotive water pumps in South America, Heliodino has adopted impellers injection molded from Zytel HTN to replace aluminum or cast iron components for a number of aftermarket pumps.
The pump manufacturer's tests show that the HTN impellers withstand more than 1000 hours in standard automotive coolant at continuous service temperatures from 110 to 115°C with peaks of 130°C.
Heliodino's engineers evaluated PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) for making the impellers but rejected it owing to concerns about breakage during shipping, handling and assembly. Damage rates for impellers made of Zytel HTN are practically zero, according to a Heliodino source.
The impellers molded from Zytel HTN cost less to produce than metal parts. They require no secondary finishing operations, and their molds cost less than tooling for metal casting. They also weigh much less than the metal parts.
Auno S.A., La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina, molds impellers for Heliodino from Zytel HTN51G35HSL, a 35% glass-reinforced, heat stabilized grade. |
