'VisionWorks with Best Technologies'

The inaugural appearance of the company and its Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants Business Unit (CAS BU) at the leading trade show for suppliers to the coatings, adhesives and sealants industry is centered around a broad spectrum of raw materials, innovations and solutions. The central topics of the 224 square meter stand are raw materials for waterborne coatings, high-solids systems, solvent-free coatings and UV-curing coatings, and also for adhesives and sealants.

Highlighted coating applications include automotive and industrial coatings, wood and furniture coatings and floor coatings, whereas applications in the shoe, furniture and automotive industries are the primary focus for sealants and adhesives. A wide-ranging lecture series for customers supplements the comprehensive information available in the form of video presentations, exhibits and brochures. Directly opposite at Stand 251, Wolff Cellulosics GmbH & Co. KG, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bayer MaterialScience, is presenting its diverse range of high-performance additives for emulsion systems, printing inks and wood coatings.

“The market for polyurethane coatings and adhesives will continue to grow at above-average rates over the next few years,” said Dr. Joachim Wolff, Head of BU CAS, at a press conference. “This is particularly true for isocyanate raw materials; forecasts here call for growth rates of roughly five percent a year.” Bayer MaterialScience is one of the world’s leading suppliers of isocyanates for coatings and adhesives, and is determined to further strengthen its position. “We are investing in large, state-of-the-art production facilities in Germany and in China so that we can participate in the strong growth markets of Asia/Pacific and Eastern Europe,” said Dr. Wolff. “Furthermore, we strive to generate additional growth through innovative developments.” As an example he cited the “Smart Surfaces Initiative” for the development of functional coatings for use in medical technology, displays and monitors, optical products, semiconductors and packaging.

“VisionWorks is our motto for developments with which we take the visions of our customers and make them reality,” said Bernd Steinhilber, Head of Marketing and Business Development for the Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA) and Latin America (LATAM) regions at the CAS BU. In particular, raw materials for systems with reduced VOC content, i.e. low-VOC systems, and solvent-free coatings and adhesives are becoming increasingly important. “Our coating resins plant in Bitterfeld, where, among other things, we have been producing raw materials for waterborne and UV-curing coatings for more than 10 years, reflects our commitment to innovative and environmentally compatible products. My vision is that future production in Bitterfeld will consist almost exclusively of these types of raw materials,” added Steinhilber. The raw materials already satisfy the requirements of the new VOC Directive, which enters into force in October 2007.

In the UV-curing sector, the range of Roskydal® UA products available demonstrates the many and diverse applications for which coatings formulated with these products are suitable. Hardness and flexibility, but also abrasion resistance, reactivity and other properties can be tailored to the specific application.

UV-curing is also now an option for independent craftsman. It is ideal for spot repairs, in which smaller, predominately flat bodywork parts are repaired. The process and appropriate UV-A sources are currently coming onto the market in the United States and Europe.

Rail vehicles are now manually spray coated with a completely waterborne coating system consisting of primer, basecoat and topcoat formulated with Bayhydrol® and Bayhydur® raw materials, and which cures in two hours at 60 °C. The high-gloss, weather-resistant coatings could also be used in the future as anti-graffiti coatings, as they provide reliable protection against the spray attacks.

Also formulated with the Bayhydrol® and Bayhydur® or Desmodur® and Desmophen® polyurethane raw material systems are the Artwalk® brand of unique, decorative floor coatings. Bayer MaterialScience has now concluded cooperation agreements for the formulation, design and application of the walkable works of art with seven cobranding partners in various European countries, from whom end consumers can procure the decorative floor coatings.

Adhesives processors are also increasingly turning to more environment-friendly systems which are also very economical. Thanks to their long contact adhesion times, strong adhesion and the durability of the bonds, one-component adhesives based on Dispercoll® C waterborne polychloroprene dispersions from Bayer MaterialScience have proven themselves in the furniture, shoe and automobile industries, and also in construction. Dispercoll® S silica gel dispersions can significantly increase the green strength of these adhesives, allowing industrial users to continue processing their products immediately after joining. Heat-activated adhesives formulated with Dispercoll® U waterborne polyurethane dispersions will allow the shoe industry, for example, to meet the future requirements of the VOC Directives. Comparisons with their solventborne equivalents show that the new systems meet or even exceed today’s high quality standard for the bonding of shoe soles, for example.

Rheology has a decisive influence on the quality and production of emulsion paints. Thickening efficiency and good processing properties must be harmonized if the paint is to be economical. Walocel® is a line of cellulose-based, universal viscosity modifiers from Wolff Cellulosics with outstanding solubility in aqueous systems.
