Cotton treated with hydrophilic polymer absorbs moisture in great quanitities
Natural Fibres : 25 January, 2013
A hydrophilic (super-absorbent) polymer called PNIPAAm, developed at the Eindhoven University of Technology and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, could be used to enable cheap cotton to provide water in deserts and other arid regions.

Mushroom roots digest and bind agricultural waste to form polystyrene foam substitute
Natural Fibres : 21 November, 2012
There is increasing and widespread interest in biodegradable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics. One recent development in this area is a material called EcoCradle. Developed by Ecovative Design LLC, the material replaces synthetic, petroleum-based foams such as expanded polypropylene (EPP), expanded polyethylene (EPE), and expanded polystyrene (EPS). Containing fungus rather than petroleum, EcoCradle not so much manufactured as grown.

Biodegradable polymers from plants can be left or right-handed
Natural Fibres : 01 April, 2011
Scientists at Bath and Tel Aviv Universities are developing a new chemical catalyst to improve the process of making these plastics, making them stronger and more heat-resistant so they can be used for a wider range of objects such as engineering plastics for the automotive industry, microwavable trays and hot drinks cups.
