Perovskite spray-on solar cells could help cut the cost of solar energy |
Solar Cells
: 10 August, 2014 |
Perovskite is a promising new material for solar cells, combing high efficiency with low materials costs. A team of scientists at the University of Sheffield are the first to fabricate perovskite solar cells using a spray-painting process – a discovery that could help cut the cost of solar electricity. The spray-painting method could be used in high volume manufacturing. |

Video File: Gallium arsenide nanowire filaments to revolutionise solar energy? |
Solar Cells
: 14 April, 2013 |
Imagine a solar panel more efficient than today’s best solar panels, but using 10 000 times less material. This is what EPFL researchers expect given recent findings on tiny nanowire filaments. Solar technology integrating nanowires could capture large quantities of light and produce energy with incredible efficiency at a much lower cost. This technology is possibly the future for powering microchips and the basis for a new generation of solar panels. |

Thin-film copper indium gallium (di)selenide (CIGS) claims new world record for solar cell efficiency |
Solar Cells
: 25 January, 2013 |
For years, scientists and engineers have tried to develop a way to make solar electricity effective and affordable on a large scale. These new thin film solar cells may a step in the right direction for doing just that. Scientists based at Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, have set a new efficiency record for thin-film copper indium gallium (di)selenide (or CIGS) based solar cells on flexible polymer foils, reaching an efficiency of 20.4%. This is an increase from a previous record of 18.7% set by the team back in 2011. |
